BTU's Green+
BTU is committed to providing our customers with low-cost, efficient, and environmentally-friendly
electric power. Our
Energy $avings and Protection (E$P) programs help our
customers save money by lowering their peak demand while at the same time reducing
the amount of generation needed system-wide. In addition, they help protect your
valuable electronic devices from harmful voltage spikes.
Many homes have electronic equipment such as computers and TVs that are sensitive
to harmful power surges that do occur from time to time, making the
Whole House Surge Protection Program
a good defense. Your home may not have adequate insulation, in which case the
Insulation Loan Program
is a great solution. Want to buy a new air conditioner, heater, or home appliance?
Our
HVAC Loan Program
and
Electric Appliance Financing Program
can help you make it a reality. Home and business owners alike can reap savings
with our
Compact Fluorescent Lighting Program, or, if your business

BTU Residential Whole-House Surge Protection
Lightning, accidents, and heavy equipment start-up cause power spikes and surges
to occur. Once inside your home, the high voltage spikes can damage your sensitive
devices throughout your home.
The Whole House System provides reliable surge protection for a low monthly fee.
The power entrance surge protector, mounted at the power meter, prevents external
high voltage spikes from entering your home. Power entrance protection reduces potentially
damaging voltage spikes to the "manageable" level.
If you are interested in receiving more information on the Whole House Surge Protection
System, please call us at 821-5715.

Stopping spikes and protecting your home is as easy as 1, 2, 3.
- Contact BTU.
- BTU will install primary service entrance (at the meter) surge protection.
- A monthly fee for Whole House Surge Protection will begin appearing on your BTU
bill.

Insulation Loan Program
The Insulation Loan Program enables homeowners to upgrade insulation levels in existing
homes, reducing infiltration and heat transfer. This, in turn, reduces energy consumption
and makes the home more comfortable. Loan approval (up to $1,500)
is based on the customer's payment history with BTU, and the payments are automatically
included in the customer's monthly utility bill. Interest is compounded at 7%.
We keep all relevant loan applications on file for three months. After that period
of time ends, you will need to fill out and resubmit the pre-qualification information
again for approval.

Compact Fluorescent Lighting Program
BTU encourages our customers to use compact fluorescent lighting. Compact fluorescent
lighting comes in a variety of lamp types, sizes and shapes, so whatever your lighting
application needs; you can find it in a compact fluorescent lamp.
Why choose compact fluorescent lighting? It’s energy efficient. Fluorescent lighting
is 4x more efficient than incandescent lighting and lasts 10x longer. You can easily
feel the difference of the heat output. Incandescent lighting is 17% light and 83%
heat. Compact fluorescent lighting is 88% light and 12% heat! The amount of light
output, or lumens, is the same and the energy consumed is about 75% less! In addition
to that consider the savings on the air conditioning part of your utility bill.
The color rendition or quality of the light has been greatly improved; compact fluorescent
lamps are rated at 84% of the color of sunlight. The newest technology lamps use
phosphors that replicate almost all of the colors in a rainbow, which means you
have many color options available from bright white to a warmer, more yellow light.
Another benefit is the savings in maintenance costs. Does anyone like to change
out light fixtures? Because fluorescent lamps last 10,000 hours that’s one change
of a light fixture versus 10 if you use incandescent lamps.
To see the true differences between compact fluorescent lighting and ordinary incandescent
lighting, BTU conducted an experiment. To set up our test we used a box that was
specially made to hold two lamps, we screwed in one incandescent lamp and one compact
fluorescent lamp. We also connected two electric meters, one for each lamp; they
measured the consumption used by each. The compact fluorescent lamp had the same
lumen (light) output as the incandescent lamp and obviously the wattage was 1x
less than the incandescent lamp. The lights were turned on and stayed on 24 hours
a day, seven days a week. As the incandescent lamps burned out, we replaced them
and kept a count of the number of incandescent lamps we had to replace while the
same original fluorescent lamp kept burning. We conducted the experiment two different
times and in both cases, we had over 23 incandescent lamps that were replaced to
the original fluorescent lamp!
Do you still think of fluorescent lighting as the circular lights made 30 years
ago? If so, you will be amazed at the options you have when purchasing compact fluorescent
lighting today. Lighting manufacturers have just about every type, shape, size,
wattage available in compact fluorescents. There are even lights that are specifically
made for wet areas, ones that are dimmable and ones that are used in recessed light
fixtures.

Commercial Lighting Program
This program is designed to help commercial customers reduce demand in existing
facilities. Through the promotion of upgraded installations and conversions to more
efficient lighting, BTU customers are able to achieve significant savings in their
lighting costs. Reducing a lighting load also results in reduced heat generation,
which results in substantial air conditioning savings. Adequate lighting is always
maintained, and often improved, through this conversion. After an initial survey
of the existing facilities to determine existing lighting load, a BTU Energy Service
Advisor computes load reduction, estimated costs, rebates and resulting annual savings
from a retrofit. Upon receipt of the rebate request and 100% completion of the project,
a final inspection will be made. Lighting rebates are made directly to the customer
upon completion of retrofit.
