RELEASE: BTU Launches Temporary Government Shutdown Assistance Program for Impacted Customers
Bryan, Texas — Bryan Texas Utilities (BTU) is implementing a temporary assistance program to support customers financially impacted by the federal government shutdown. The program will prevent service disconnections for eligible customers who are furloughed or currently unpaid due to the shutdown.
To qualify, BTU residential or small commercial customers must provide acceptable proof of furlough or loss of pay from a federal employer. Verification may include a furlough notice, a letter or email from a federal supervisor, or other official HR notification.
“We know that families in our community rely on federal employment,” said Gary Miller, BTU General Manager. “During a shutdown, those workers shouldn’t have to worry about keeping the lights on. BTU is here to make sure residents have stability and support during these challenging times.”
"Part of our city owning and operating a public utility is making sure our residents are taken care of," said Bryan Mayor, Bobby Gutierrez. "In times of uncertainty, we are proud to stand behind those in our community that need assistance."
Eligible accounts will be protected from disconnection for nonpayment throughout the duration of the shutdown. While normal billing will continue, customers will not be subject to disconnection if full payment is not provided until the shutdown ends. At that time, BTU representatives will work individually with affected customers to establish payment arrangements.
Customers may apply at the webpage linked below, where they will provide their documentation, BTU account number, and contact information.
